We can do a few things to protect ourselves and others, and we’ve probably heard them all before. These actions won’t guarantee to protect us from infection, but they can reduce our risk of infection. These tips are just as useful for avoiding an influenza (flu) virus infection during flu season and for preventing COVID-19, once the local community is known to have it circulating.

  • Wash your hands for 20 seconds & more frequently than you do now. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Try not to touch your face.
  • Stay home if you are sick, and avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
